Yes, Tobias Stone, we are very stupid. We are also spiteful. We too often deprive ourselves of benefits if it means a group we don't like would have them also. Heather McGhee talks about this in her excellent book "The Sum of Us".

We do an enormous disservice to folk in poorer countries by not letting them enter. An equal disservice we do to ourselves as a result.

It could change perhaps by shoring up the security of people and communities in order to ease the threat and fear. Especially of others not looking and sounding like them.
