I recall weather reports as a kid in New Zealand and the town of Whakatane was often referenced -- maybe because it was an indicator of what the whole country was shortly to experience.
When I became a teenager my country faced a real concern (independent of me becoming a teenager). New Zealanders not only realized that they had another language spoken in the country (apart from English) but that "Maori" should be properly pronounced. That was with the exception of the weatherman and the town of fuh-kuh-taa-nay.
