I worry about Medium becoming too self-contained, closed to readers on the outside world, and not growing because of these.

The paywall has prompted me to publish my political articles on my website for my readers. It would be wonderful if they all became Medium members. Some have, but the majority have not.

The paywall discourages me from referencing Medium articles in my writing published elsewhere (it's a turn-off to hit a paywall when invited to seek further information).

I could publish on Medium outside the payment program. But, like others, I enjoy the program and am reluctant to give it up.
