To Nikki Haley
The national debt is certainly something to be monitored because it can lead to some of the problems you say. The cost of money is the more important factor than the actual amount (the difference is not aways made clear).
That said, the immediate concern is the corona relief package to keep the economy steady. The Republicans in the Senate are not facing reality with their low ball offer (not at all assured that they have done their sums). The House package is likely pretty much on the mark as we are positioned no better now than back in April on both the disease and economy fronts.
What is astonishing to me is that the Republicans choose NOT to take credit for their excellent participation on delivering the first rescue package. It was all important in keeping the economy humming given the circumstances. Now, they have decided to be CHEAP when it is unwise to be so. The continuing of the $600 per week unemployment payments is an economically good deal (as well as a vital social one). The cost of NOT reaching into government pockets at this time would result in a much more expensive rescue of landlords and banks later — apart from avoiding a personal and family disaster. Better to distribute money to individuals now and let them satisfy the demands further along the belt.
