I think it goes deeper than what the likes of Tucker Carlson peddle.

Americans have become prone to deep loneliness. A feeling of being abandoned. This gives rise to all the nonsense of conspiracy theories etc. which provide a weird kind of comfort.

This disconnection and isolation of many in our population explain a little of why America has suffered ten times the Covid deaths as Australia, our most similar country for comparison.
