This is questionable. Or at least I'm not convinced that it's the threat of NATO to Russia that Putin now surrounds Ukraine and ready to invade. He's essentially doing what he believes he can get away with, not have democracy encroach on his turf and bolster his approval at home.

A common problem with authoritarian figures is retirement. Putin no doubt is anxious as to his future security and keeping his extracted billions.

There are certainly passions there that Ukraine still belongs to Russia (goes back to Peter and warm weather ports). Putin himself feels these I'm sure. Most probably he would not want the risks and expense of an actual military invasion but rather a simple submission of Ukraine to his power.

He certainly has the upper hand because NATO is not going to war over Ukraine. That said we should do all to help Ukraine (at their request) defend themselves from an unprovoked invasion.

If Putin does not get a very bloody nose in this episode he will continue elsewhere. Romania could be next.

Many thanks.
