Harder to inherit a base than one thinks. DeSantis or someone else has to be their own person. And DeSantis has the difficulty of little charisma.

It's a reminder for the Democrats to get someone who can run and win in 2024 (to leave it open). Both Joe and Kamala are candidates to lose.

History is littered with fill-in's that just didn't work. Maduro for Hugo Chavez, Raul for Fidel Castro, Isabel for Eva Peron, Anthony Eden for Winston Churchill and John Major for Margaret Thatcher.

Exceptions are when they quickly adopted their own strengths as the case with Truman following FDR and Sadat following Nasser.
