Was there brutality? exploitation? Certainly! The British also were great explorers of our world in geography, science, engineering and genuinely believed in trade and building economic structures which we have enormously bennefitted from. The folks that come to mind are James Cook, Charles Darwin, Adam Smith, George Stephenson and Thomas Brassey (railways around the globe).
