The cry will be that we will be paying for an America of lazy bums. There would be some of that but in the overall scheme it doesn't matter. Base income can be thought as investing in education and not a traditional welfare program where many become economically and socially trapped. As you point out, it's a base from which people can spring.

Ironically, the Republicans are better positioned (should they renew themselves)

than Democrats to bring in such policy. People forget that the base income idea was as much from the right as the left.
