The audience response is vital. Because writing is essentially an isolated sport, readers have been traditionally distant. That isn't the case anymore. I would never return to reading the NYT paper pages because the comments are so valuable. Their breaking article on the debate generated around 10,000 responses -- most intelligent and all-telling.

I prioritize writers who reply to my comments. I'm likely not alone in doing so.
