Sometimes sounds like a good idea Paul Abela, but it's really flawed. It would be an absolute nightmare to collect and would always fall short of expectations (it would require a vast number of valuations of assets which is difficult putting it mildly). France abandoned the wealth tax -- and that tells us something.
Perhaps a better way to is a VAT (Value Added Tax) and with that company "profits" are not relied upon. Businesses would be taxed from the get go and hence the Amazons paying no tax situation wouldn't exist.
The VAT could actually replace all income and property tax (and existing sales tax which is only at retail). The downside is that like sales tax, VAT amounts to a flat tax which leaves poorer folk paying "proportionately" more tax because they spend more of their incomes. But if the VAT is coupled with a generous base income for all then it can appeal.
