The tariffs hurt Chinese exports, which the country relies on for growth. Without the tariffs, China would dominate the auto, solar panels, wind turbines, and green sectors in the U.S. (arguably beneficial to both countries).

An underappreciated consequence of the tariffs is reduced American security. America's and China's interconnectivity facilitates mutual interests, and while peace and prosperity are not guaranteed, this favors the direction.
