Setbacks on Ukraine Must Not Be Made into Defeat

While American funding is in limbo, Ukraine can be uplifted, and Putin delivered a blow

Donald Trump directed Mike Johnson, the Speaker of the House, to forbid a vote authorizing new money for Ukraine. Most in the legislative chamber favor supplying the $60 billion defense package. The former president is likely motivated by making Joe Biden look weak heading into the November presidential election; the adverse consequences for Ukraine and American credibility appear irrelevant to him.

Regardless of these circumstances — or because of them, an opportunity to counter the upset is presented

A new path for Ukraine must be charted, understood, communicated, and followed because of the stalemate in reclaiming territory, unrelenting Russian attacks, and uncertain American support. Ukraine must shift its efforts and resources from costly offenses to holding lines and normalizing the economy and daily lives. Protecting the population, infrastructure, and factories must take precedence over recovering Russian-occupied land — for the time being.
