I suspect one in ten of my followers are readers.

Medium needs more readers, but it eliminated free access for outside customers to read even one article. This will prevent growth in membership.

I am obliged to reproduce my column for customers on my website, and more significantly, this stifles referencing Medium articles in my submitted to other publications.
