Imperialism is a term that is full of connotations, most negative.

Keep in mind that prosperity exists in the world because of all the trade with colonies over the last centuries. Some empires and capitalists did put huge investments into these places that were actually helpful. Railways were built in India as well as a bureaucracy.

The British wouldn't have their tea without trade with China. Belgians wouldn't have their chocolate and Italy their tomatoes without trade with other parts of the world.
