Breaking up the issue may be helpful. No "Gun Control" talk as "Gun Safety" is far less confrontational.

Suicides by firearms are the worst statistic. This could be broken off and addressed separately in healthcare.

As you point out, the evidence is overwhelming that the availability of guns coincides with deaths. Comparisons with other rich world countries are even more startling.
