Roobert Billyard, this is largely nonsense.
NATO is a defense treaty that has protected members from the kind of attack that Ukraine is currently under. The security umbrella of NATO has allowed European countries to thrive and the U.S. pays by far the biggest share of maintaining it.
Europe's alternative would be to have its own defensive collective and this has been suggested at times, mainly by France because of lost confidence in America. But this would be more costly, not as comprehensive and diminish European presence in the world.
Both Finland and Sweden are now more interested in joining NATO and I'm sure the Baltic states and Romania are delighted at this moment they belong.
What has been troubling to Europeans is diminished U.S. commitment to NATO and its value, especially under the last president. This has changed around dramatically by Putin's thuggery and Zelenskyy standing up to it.
Many thanks.
