When glasnost returns at some point to Russia, Gorbachev may be seen as a hero by his people. Today, that vision doesn't exist.

Russia was steered away from economic catastrophe. Many Russians fail to register the enormous public suffering that would have happened without Gorbachev's actions, and hence no thanks to him were apparently needed.
