Odd things happen when there are not voices from a group or team. Putin's now reckless behavior may have evolved from increasing isolation or simply (perhaps with age) an unwillingness to listen to minds around him. He could also have taken on a venture way beyond his abilities -- bitten off more than he can chew.

He is digging himself and Russia a dungeon that is becoming more and more inescapable. His leadership looks hopeless. Few Russians would be pleased at this moment. The military commanders could be facing war crimes, the oligarchs losing assets and being confinement to Russian soil, and the general population subject to dreadful inflation and a diminished living standard.

By design, of course, there is no easy transfer of leadership. The only thing I can think of is that the population declare a vote of no confidence by taking to the streets in such volume that they can't all be arrested and squeezed into prisons.

I agree with you Martin French, that the nuclear threat is horrifying. And we need to have a clear answer for that. HOPING he won't do that is inadequate.

Many thanks. Excellent article.
