Putin has invaded Ukraine, destroyed cities and killed thousands of its civilian population. This was an unprovoked attack on a neighboring country.

Essentially Putin is a mobster boss. That is how he has run Russia and has regarded Ukraine as a subservient territory that pays rent to him and abides by his rules. When Ukraine wanted OUT from this relationship, and did not cower to his threats, Ukraine needed to be punished.

Putin miscalculated the resistantance from Zelenskyy and the Ukrainian people. Since even punishment has NOT worked, Ukraine now has to be killed.
