Michael Asaro, this made me think of the Victorians in the industrial revolution in that they gave the British their duality (that was also transplanted to the colonies and to parts of the U.S.). The Victorians wanted everything measured and counted. Even in public parks, the trees were labelled with species name -- including the latin. Also the flowers and plants were to be observed and not touched. The problem came with stuff that couldn't be categorized in this way and they kind of fell out of life -- or at least British life. Stuff like food -- and, sex had nowhere to go except behind very closed doors or even underground.
We have come a long way since those days. And Britain certainly changed. Today there is no necessary difference in design, food -- even wine! compared with late industrializing countries like Italy.
Many thanks
