My point is that Sanders could have won in 2016 or 2020. How successful his presidency might have been is another matter (although I imagine it being generally deadlocked).

I tried to keep the piece focused on a fundamental requirement for Democrats to win presidential elections -- a point I'm not convinced is understood by those analyzing what went wrong.

Although the Clinton and Obama presidencies can be criticized, I focused on their brilliance in winning elections. They were excellent communicators, an absolute necessity for being elected and governing.

Hossein, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez will likely compete for the presidency in 2028. It would be a mistake for party establishment Democrats to block her nomination regardless of antipathy toward or uncertainty of her left-wing populism.
