This is a disaster for Democrats, Americans, and the world.

We can sift through the reasons, which are many, multilayered, and go back years.

Although this will be costly, democracy will generally survive. The most significant harm will be to other countries and the world's prosperity and security. For example, Mexico will suffer enormously, and its already poor relationship with the U.S. will likely deteriorate.

Populists are difficult to get rid of -- the list is long.

The unhappy outcome of the election was avoidable. Democrats nationwide said they did not want Biden to run for a second term. But Biden and enablers gave voters the middle finger, and the troubles cascaded into last night's results.

Harris was not to blame except for not being a brilliant candidate. Biden, on the other hand, is well-deserved toast.
