Katharine, there is an opposite way of looking at this.

American companies continuing to do business in Russia maintain connections that are stabilizing and deescalating forces. This is important because an isolated population is likelier to become in lockstep with Putin than empathetic to the West. Some day Putin will be gone, and another opportunity for Russia to be included in the modern world hopefully will present itself. Business, science, and arts connections will be critical to that transition.

Our fight is with Putin and not Russia. He had already conquered the Russian population. It's counterintuitive, but a closer relationship, however tricky, with ordinary Russians through hamburgers and exchanges of artists and professors is maybe helpful.

Many thanks. Always a pleasure.
