Motorcar racing is pure luxury and fun for those spending billions on it, but this is how we got disc brakes (Jaguar), fuel injection (Aston Martin, I think), safety belts, airbags, etc.

Also, items introduced as luxuries become commonplace: laptops, smartphones, washers/dryers, microwaves, central air, overseas travel, second cars, etc.
