Katharine, because other countries can manufacture clothing more efficiently than we can in America. Although, the more skillful and lucrative components, such as designing and marketing, are done in the U.S. (or Italy, the UK, etc.).

It's a team effort that benefits (if not everyone) the most. Because of bathrobes and a few other items, China managed to raise millions of its population out of poverty. Similarly, with Vietnam, Bangladesh, India, and Cambodia where your L.L. Bean was beautifully made. And all (or mostly) to our benefit. Americans got to afford an unbelievable array of items previously unavailable to them (our kids never in history had so many toys -- and sporting equipment! We had to buy Suburbans to carry it all).

In short, Katharine, what's not to like?

Instead of an American risking their fingers at a sewing machine, they may prefer operating the equipment and testing our eyes for glaucoma.

Please read my "Jobs! Jobs! Jobs! Cry the Politicians". You may find it jarring. Most did, but until we reverse some misconceptions, our future prosperity, not to mention happiness, is at risk.

Many thanks. Your writing is always in search of a better world. Best to you.
