John, what happens from this tragedy and massive upset to the world is very uncertain. Guaranteed, both Ukraine and Russia will be in very poor shape -- Putin with heightened fear and security with his population, neighbors and the the rest of the world.

There is no set path for a transfer of Russian leadership. But possibly one could be conjured. Some kind of Putin retirement package could be arranged. As repugnant as this would be, it could be both a conclusion and new beginning for both countries. Mind you, some pretty deft talking would be demanded to get agreement from the parties -- and Putin himself.

I see China as having a significant roll NOW and certainly moving forward. If any one person could halt the war, it would be Xi Jinping. Unfortunately our deliberate movement away from China is a handicap. But I always believe opportunities exist and it's just a matter of seeing them. The Ukraine war can be a reason for the U.S. and China to get closer. It may not be comfortable -- but sensible.

Many thanks. Best to you always.
