John Levin, perhaps not the primary objective. There were no immediate plans for Ukraine to become part of NATO.

Putin wants Ukraine in his sphere of influence. This having a different meaning from the West's. It's submission to his power and desires for whatever from the leader and country. The last thing he wants is a flourishing democracy on his boarder and even if Putin retreats his current offense the situation is not over.

Credit can be given Biden and his team but let's not get too carried away there.

As you point out Putin has the problem of all dictators when they age -- how to retire? in safety and keep the loot? It's a tough one, even for Putin.

Many thanks.
