Agreed, prison time isn't appropriate.

But his convictions (and those of other high-profile people) raise the question of prison time generally -- its purpose, cost, and efficacy.

Americans are passionate about locking people up, and politicians are generally keen to champion the popular sentiment. Peer countries incarcerate a fraction of the numbers and do not suffer from higher crime rates.
