John,
My suggestion to Kamala Harris was to open with a genuine compliment to Trump and extend a friendly word to his base supporters. Jonathon Swan, "Your supporters love you," and Bob Woodward disarmed Trump in this way.
The idea was to surprise, flatter, and soften Donald for a later thrust. They would be an assertive action to get on top and boost confidence.
Harris did this with her immediate striding handshake that Trump was not expecting. She also empathized with his rally audiences in suffering from boredom.
With this successful debate, Harris should be confident to do Town Halls and engage directly with the press. The wave must be maintained.
Best.
