Jennifer Dodge, differential pricing would be done more often if the means were there. It's actually okay and can better reflect the market.
I occasionally go to a vegetable market where I'm sure I pay more than their local customers. The apparatus and tomatoes are deliberately not price tagged. Overall the system is accommodating in that poorer folk will pay less than I, and the merchants make ends meet. Doctors, particularly in rural places, have exercised this system for centuries.
I worked for a luxury retail store and received a substantial discount on merchandise I bought. The store benefitted from having me as a customer where I would otherwise not be, and I could attire myself in luxurious products I could not afford.
I understand your point of deception, however.
Many thanks.
