It's a notion that makes us feel worthy and reassures our existence. We are tactile creatures. Our cabinet doors must have a feel and a smell, and mechanisms are a bonus.

Americans lament that they don't make stuff anymore and will spend trillions proving they can when buying from elsewhere would make more sense.
