I question the emphasis on Russian imperialism in Putin's war with Ukraine. History has been used as a propaganda ingredient for Putin (including the Orthodox Church).

That many support Putin's adventure can be put down to not knowing any better because news distributed is Putin's. Fear along with complacency in the population would also play a part. I'm not aware of any street rallies supporting Putin's operation.

It's important to make the distinction between Putin and the Russian population. He has in effect conquered his own people. Even the oligarchs (if not generals) are completely beholden to Putin. There is no real team. It's Putin.

Adopting history, ideology and Christianity are favorite ways to cover sins for autocrats and mobsters. With greater sins, greater cover is required.
