Great article, Kurt Andersen. Many thanks.

The cult thing fills a gap in people's world. Arguably, the same way religion does. It's powerful, sexy and offers a comforting and purposeful place -- lots of camaraderie -- a party, even.

Reason, logic and simple arithmetic take effort and then the answers may be still out of reach. There is a laziness factor, too. WHATEVER explanation of events and status puts the uncertainty to bed -- to be able to move on. If the story is wildly colorful and out of this world -- then, all the more satisfying and enjoyable.

If cults exist, then they will exist in political parties -- no surprise here. But, nuts of course!
