Mountain ranges are historically strong border protections. People are less likely to claim land they can't easily see -- the Pyrenees separating France and Spain.

Oceans prove effective barriers. However, Islands visible off the coast can fall prey -- the Falklands to Argentinian generals.

Poland's topography invited incursions.
