Good sensible article Shakar Narayan.

The examples are Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump. Disturbingly similar in their views to the outside world -- but then the majority of Americans are pretty much isolationists, and recently have become more so.

Joe Biden follows this road perhaps more than people believe. He was adamant about getting out of Afghanistan and followed the Trump / Pompeo surrender to the Taliban in Doha. He countered his foreign policy advisors and didn't bother consulting with our NATO allies also in Afghanistan.

The problem is that this contraction from world engagement is not confined to the military. Notice that there is no talk or interest in new trade deals --None! The tariffs are still in place on Chinese goods which now must cost each of our households about $1000 per year. Biden is continuing to build the wall between us and China that Trump began. The channels of fresh talent flowing into the U.S. blocked under Trump have essentially remained in place under Biden.

The point that I'm getting at is that we desperately need the engagement with the rest of the world not just for our security reasons (although very important to achieve anything) but to really prosper. To do the things you are talking about at home and to tackle the huge issue of climate change which needs money and cooperation like never before.

Many thanks
