Unfortunately, even the topic is an affront to most Americans and any change in attitudes (let alone legislation) is unlike. Perhaps if we can reframe (even rename) the issue. We could try taking the subject away from the Mexican border to get some distance. I've tried that in op-ed articles.
I wrote just recently "Immigration and Climate Solutions Are Related" here on MEDIUM. I was prompted by a great NYT article by Shikha Dalmia who argues that America needs more immigration to move forward and be competitive. The comments to her article (mainly left to mmoderate voices) expressed very clearly they did NOT want people. The reason was global warming. This has become the new reason for saying no.
