In defense of Tom Friedman, he is very much a political animal and searches for compromise -- something that we can all kind of live with. You are right that his "Big wall with a big gate" is somewhat disingenuous because as you say the gate is never going to be big enough and he offers no dimentions size. I really took his meaning to be that instead of having unaccountable and suffering migration at the border we greatly expand accountable migration through normal points of entry. But, too few would vote for that and besides we would have to get over the spite of the Joneses.
