Giuseppe Borghese, The underlying issues are not trivial. The conservative party has been overtaken by popularism that has come about especially in the last 20 years. Culminating with Trump (but he isn't the problem). The reasons are deep and not the superficial load stuff we see.

Until we correct the fundamental issues that are to do with lack of social and economic mobility we will likely have what we have. This includes a drift to authoritarianism -- and as you point out the beginnings of a civil war.
