Biden has to convince independent voters that he is up to doing the job for the next five years. This is independent of how Trump behaves.

It's a tall order because Biden will likely have further mishaps between now and November, and his communication ability will not miraculously improve. As you point out, Trump escapes scrutiny because we are overwhelmed by the interference he generates.

The boldest action is for Biden to step aside -- even at this late stage. But Biden and his enablers look dug in.

A bold but less risky option to get Biden across the finish line is to exploit the VP position, which currently offers little. Swap out Harris for another who can communicate for Biden and offer a path into the future. The talent at hand for this is Buttigieg.

The downside of opposition to replacing a Black woman VP would have to be managed. In the light of what is at stake, this is doable.
