Art historian Kenneth Clark chastised Leonardo da Vinci for his chaotic approach. He lamented that if only he had completed more of the artwork he began, later generations would be richer.

But like your illustration, Leonardo flowed all over, often in multiple directions, including anatomy, hydraulics, aerodynamics, chemistry, armaments, and set design, which became a part of his paintings and sculptures.

In his excellent book "Leonardo da Vinci," Walter Isaacson said that the master went a long way and delivered much without a plan.
