Gary, you are absolutely right on. Not only does globalization provide us with a choice of competitively priced products and prosperity, but arguably more important is that trade (and all the interconnections supporting it) makes us MUCH SAFER. Security is of course never guaranteed, but wealthy countries don't go to war with each other because they would be hurting their vested interests.

Mr Putin either doesn't recognize this system or fails to appreciate its value. He is a throw back to before WW I.

Sanctions however should only be used carefully and as a last resort. They are costly and most of the time simply don't work. Sanctions also undermine the very measure that you are advocating. Having myriads of interconnections between nations. Sanctions work against globalization and motivate nations to self supply. The world unfortunately often confuses SECURITY of supply with INDEPENDENT supply.
