Excellent piece, Jesse Owen.

The costs of loneliness are enormous and likely still underestimated.

Interestingly, there are many levels of loneliness, including national, which coincides with protectionist and isolationist policies having widespread appeal (I write on foreign affairs and politics).

But personally, people can help counter loneliness in relatively simple ways. Saying hello and engaging in brief exchanges with neighbors is one, and assisting the checkout person in packing the groceries is another. Offering service to others is an enjoyable connector (this is a strength, not subservience).

Many thanks. Best.
