Excellent piece, Janice.

You give reasons, background, and circumstances for these tragic events and stress that they are NOT "out of the blue" and that countermeasures can be taken.

The obvious countermeasure is to disallow assault weapons designed to inflict damage beyond a hunting rifle or handgun. The U.S. did this previously by banning machine guns. New Zealand banned assault weapons within weeks of the Christchurch massacre.

But we have a terrifying loneliness problem in America which is a killer. It's in our interest to care about the people around us.

A thought is to emphasize the idea of service, which in America has come to mean weakness, which it is not.

Many U.S. companies and the military are successful because they inverted the triangle where the sales associate and common soldier are elevated to the top and the CEO and general least served.

With the above model, Jordan Neely, the 30-year-old homeless man with health issues, would have been served and not killed.

Many thanks. Best.
