My ninety-year-old mother pushed my ingenuity in getting her out of bed in the morning.

Always forthright, she would sit up at right angles and declare that she just wanted to die.

"Let's have a lovely breakfast together first," I would reply with a smile and look for a slight gleam in her eye.

It mostly worked.
