Excellent article Sean.
The American dream can possibly be moved. Housing once deemed working class can become highly desirable eg. Darlington and Paddington in Sydney Australia, and Feemans Bay in Auckland New Zealand.
A few thoughts:
Automotive vehicles would reduce the need for ownership and parked cars and the (enormous) space they occupy. Many who don't find driving thrilling would forgo one car. The "auto pods" themselves need not be big and heavy and don't need the same road space.
Socially it could become more desirable to rent living space rather than buying a house. Leasing a car became OK socially and was viewed more as a financial mechanism as opposed to status.
We should completely eliminate mortgage subsidies and tax breaks for housing. A UBI could replace them making for better placement of resources.
Design can make a difference. Where relatively dense housing is achieved that incorporates private outdoor play and garden space -- characteristics of suburban living.
Many thanks. Best to you.
