The issue includes a bundle of arguments that circle around power. Some are simply conveniences to that end, such as today's emphasis on state rights which is a red herring if ever there was one.

Although not directly expressed today, an additional factor remains. The sexual freedom of women which still doesn't sit comfortably with many in America -- and not just men. Getting pregnant is the evidence of the sin and like the scarlet letter is must be borne. The consequences lived with as a lesson.
