You talk of Russia but it's squarely about Putin. He has the classic dictator's problem of exit. In democracies one simply steps down or is defeated in the polls and go off to play golf, paint pictures or if young enough pursue some good for the world.

We could offer him a wonderful sanctuary somewhere where he could reminisce with others his kind.

Hopefully (and it's a big hope) there are a few close to him who can convince him that invading Ukraine will not be great for his future.
