Excellent article Amanda Hanemaayer.

I think we're stuck with hypocrisy although it should always be pointed out when it happens. It can have a beneficial effect on those "absolutely" descriminated against. I guess because they can then say "what about me".

Happens in immigration all the time.

You bring up the whole notion of family. And most would agree that family comes first. But then of course the family notion expands to the people in my church or synagog, fellow Catholics, fellow Americans etc. When does that become prejudice and racism?

I remember the case of Ryan White back in the AIDS / Reagan years. He was a victim of the disease singled out as a poster boy for AIDS awareness (he was infected "innocently" through contaminated blood). But of course there were thousands of deaths of gays and drug takers that were not treated with such reverence. AIDS activates generally let the hypocrisy of it slide (and were smart to do so) because overall the Ryan White focus was beneficial.

Many thanks.
