Capitalism (even greed) is not the villain here. It is simply the flow of money, goods and services which can allow us to get out of the awfulness you describe. The problem is more in our poor understanding of evidence around us and a failure to agree and act on longer term consequences that hurt us all -- including Rikers Island and the undermining of local newspapers.

Climate management is a case in point as well as COVID where not attending more immediately to vaccinating the rest of the world will cost us many times over.

Unfortunately we are often too full of our own grievance and self to see what would be better for us.
